The Great 400 Working Vol. 1
(2002) SHT 03
In April 1999, the Great One Hundred Working took place at Sandstone Estates in South Africa's Eastern Free State. A hundred and six vintage tractors all ploughed in one field at the same time, and the attempt was recognised and formally ratified by the Guinness Book of Records.
But in 2001, the South African world record was broken. At Yass in Australia, the Aussies came in at 299 tractors - beating the record handsomely. South Africa had only one short answer to this: she had to take the record back!
And thus began the countdown to a very special event - the Great 400 Working. On 20th April 2002, hundreds of vintage tractors would all plough in one field at the same time, confident that they'd bring the world record back to South Africa.
Volume One of this pair of DVD's is the curtain raiser to the world record attempt. In the weeks and days preceding the Great 400 Working, all roads led to Sandstone Estates, as hundreds of truckloads of tractors and implements made their way there from all over South Africa.
The event also attracted entries and exhibits from elsewhere in the world, as well as a feast of vintage equipment from diverse disciplines. This DVD will introduce you to the quirks and inner workings of a host of different machines, to the people who care for them, and to the best of antique power being prepared for spectacular action.
The Great 400 Volume One sets the stage for a challenge with the past, a challenge we fully explore in Volume Two of this unique suite of videos. Because Volume One, of course, is only the beginning!
