Great 100 WorkingThe Great 100 Working (1999) SHT 02

For three days in April 1999, a unique heritage show was staged on a large commercial farm in South Africa's Eastern Free State. Sandstone Estates laid on The Great One Hundred Working - a steam and agricultural event celebrating three things: the final year of the millennium, the centenary of the Anglo-Boer War . . . and the army of magnificent machines that contributed so greatly to South Africa's farming past.

It was also an opportune moment for a new world record attempt: an entry into the Guinness Book of Records for the greatest number and diversity of veteran tractors ploughing in the same field at the same time.

And indeed, enthusiasts and their machines from across the globe succeeded in establishing a new category in world records: 106 vintage and veteran tractors all ploughed in the same field at the same time, stirring up a veritable thunderstorm of dust and noise - and creating a spectacle hitherto unseen in the quiet Eastern Free State! This DVD is the next best thing to having actually been there to see them in action.

In-depth interviews with the owners of restored relics will give you an insight into the highlights and low lights of the restoration process; you'll hear talk of great names like Marshall, Rumely, Fowler, Lanz, Emerson-Brantigham and John Deere; and you'll see superb examples of early tractors, steam-driven agricultural machines, stationary engines, vintage commercial vehicles, old earth moving equipment, vintage aircraft . . . and the 2-foot narrow gauge steam railway built specially for the event!

Aerial footage of Sandstone Estates shows just how ambitious an event this was, with thousands of visitors celebrating all that is great about Old Iron, while the narrow gauge railway gave ringside views of the action - a field of over 100 tractors ploughing their way into the Guinness Book of Records, and into history.
