Golden ThreadThe Golden Thread (1999) FRA 05

This is a DVD for lovers of rail travel in the old style - steam-hauled, romantic and meandering through some of South Africa's loveliest countryside. Travelling on the renowned Union Limited, passengers spend six leisurely days exploring South Africa's Southern Cape, Garden Route and Little Karoo.

The Union Limited was once a luxury express train that in its heyday took first-class passengers from Johannesburg to Cape Town - a journey that involved a night on board with five-course meals, silver service and wood-panelled sleeper compartments. The Golden Thread Tour is a way to relive that gracious age, and to see some of the best scenery and most interesting history that the Cape has to offer.

Passengers still eat in style in the restored dining saloon, served by stewards in immaculate dress. They are rocked to sleep by the gentle sounds of steam up ahead. And they enjoy a week of relaxed travel, superb steam photography and a sense of the pioneering spirit of the Golden Age of railways.

This DVD is part travelogue, part documentary and part rail adventure. It's for anyone who enjoys trains and wants to relive the romance of railway history.
